Criminal Cases

People v. Cozad, Joshua :

Our client Joshua Cozad had been sentenced pursuant to a plea agreement. At the time he contacted our office, he was not entitled to a lawyer. Although his crime was not, in any manner, sexually motivated, a snafu in the system required him to register as a sexual predator for the rest of his life. Not only does this error create an undue penalty on our client, it detracts from the validity of the information concerning registered sex offenders upon which many citizens rely.

Our office, through negotiation with the State Police and the State's Attorney's Office, was able to fashion an expedient remedy that resulted in our client be relieved of the unjust requirement.

People v. Epting, William:

Our client filed a pro-se post-conviction in the circuit court. The court dismissed the petition. Our client, due to a institution-wide "lock down," did not receive notice of the dismissal until after his right to appeal the dismissal had expired.

Without accessing the merits of the client's case, our office determined that an individual subject to imprisonment, should not lose his right to appeal based on the fact that the prison to which he is assigned, remained on a month long "lock down."

We are in the process of filing a Motion for Supervisory Order in the Illinois Supreme Court to restore our client's right to appeal the dismissal of his post-conviction petition.

As new cases are accepted through ILCJE, a summary will be posted on this page.

People v. Terrance Walker:

ILCJE officially started operations on February 9, 2009. The inspiration for the formation of ILCJE came from the case of People v. Terrance Walker, No. 105437. Attorney Robert M. Stephenson represented Terrance Walker pro-bono over the course of three years, culminating in the Illinois Supreme Court's opinion reversing Terrance's convictions and remanding the case for a new trial.

As new cases are accepted through ILCJE, a summary will be posted on this page.

ILCJE is interested in taking on a wide range of legal cases including, direct appeals, supreme court appeals, supervisory orders, post-conviction petitions, 2-1401 petitions, appeals from collateral proceedings, clemency petitions, and habeas petitions.
